Crippsmas Place, Holiday Display and Charity Fundraiser

Submitted By Kate Amon

This December, visitors to the north Fremont streets around Cripps Place will again enjoy cheerful displays of holiday decorations and free candy canes. This is how the residents of this Centerville neighborhood celebrate and give back to the community, continuing a holiday tradition begun by former Cripps Place neighbor Robert "Spider" Cantley over 40 years ago.

Six charities will benefit this year: Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and four local charities: SAVE, HERS Breast Cancer Foundation, Kidango, and Adopt an Angel. Last year's Crippsmas Place event raised over $12,000 for these charities.

Each December, Fremont homes on Cripps Place, and several surrounding, are decorated with traditional Crippsmas Place decorations - painted plywood with classic and new beloved children's cartoon characters, and lots of lights. Every year, new characters are added. Many families either stroll the sidewalks or slowly drive along the neighborhood streets with excited kids pointing out favorite and familiar cartoon characters and all the cheerful lights. At the end of Wellington Place, candy canes are handed out free by volunteer "elves." Any donations visitors wish to give to the charity of the day are also cheerfully accepted there.

The neighbors do ask visitors to keep in mind the area is not an actual theme park and so there are no employees to clean up, so please do not litter.

The schedule for this year's Crippsmas Place 2007 candy cane giveaways and charity collections will be for 17 days this year, Dec. 14-30, from 6 - 10 p.m.

Each day's donations is dedicated to one of the six charities. Here's the schedule:

Leukemia Lymphoma Society - "Fighting blood cancers" (Dec 23 - 24, 26 - 27, & 30)

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation - "Dedicated to finding a cure" (Dec 21 - 22, 28 - 29)

SAVE - (Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments) "Because Peace Begins at Home" (Dec 18 - 19)

HERS Breast Cancer Foundation - "Caring for women and families until there's a cure" (Dec 16 - 17)

Kidango's "Gifts from the Heart" - Gifts & basics for low income and homeless children (Dec 14 - 15)

Adopt an Angel - Gifts & basics for children in the Alameda County's Protective Child Services (Dec 20 & 25)

Planning and much of the work is done by a dedicated group of neighbors, appropriately dubbed the "Crippsmas Club". Crippsmas Club Coordinator, Kate Amon, said "I'm proud to work with such wonderful neighbors to carry on the Crippsmas Place tradition. It's always a joy to see the happy families visiting, especially the enthusiasm of the children. Supporting several deserving charities on top of that makes the efforts even more worthwhile!"

Volunteer opportunities are available Dec 15 - 30 to hand out candy canes or sing Christmas carols. We are also looking for volunteers to put up decorations for neighbors who requested help. Decoration set-up assistance will be the first two weekends of December.
