Beyond Blastoff: Surviving in Space

A lucky few have traveled to space, freed from the bonds of earth's gravity, and returned with a special and unique perspective of our planet. For the rest of us, sharing this experience can be accomplished through film, written or oral memoirs and artifacts of those travels. Chabot Space and Science Center has assembled a fascinating collection of spacecraft artifacts for visitors of all ages to see, touch and feel from tools to toilets.

The Beyond Blastoff exhibit centers around six challenges for astronauts: Staying healthy and fit, weightlessness, day-to-day living, dress, traveling to and from space and working in space. Interactive displays are designed to transport visitors - at least mentally - into orbit where they will have the opportunity to use specially designed exercise machines to stay fit and even send a photo of a weightless moment via email to friends. For those who believe they can fix anything, even in outer space, a "Microgravity Trainer" awaits simulating the mechanical challenges of manipulating tools without the anchor of friction in a solid environment. If your tastes are more voyeur than hands-on, a video demonstration of daily life will show views of earth from space as the International Space Station hurtles around our planet 16 times per day.

After examining some of the challenges and innovative solutions shown in this display, visitors will be able to take a broad look at the history and future of space flight. Along with a visual representation of human spaceflight using a timeline, technological advancements resulting from space research are displayed. The leap of mankind from simply gazing at the sky to becoming a part of it is an amazing testament to human creativity and fortitude. Beyond Blastoff gives everyone a chance to share a tangible piece of the effort.
