Holiday for Arts begins
By Anuja Seith
Halloween ghouls can now relax for another year as turkey platters are planned for Thanksgiving dinners and Santa hurriedly prepares to fill his red sack while polishing his sleigh. Arrival of winter festivities is accompanied with bustling shoppers looking for just the right gifts for friends and family.
If you are an art lover, a treat of the season will soon be here as Olive Hyde Art Guild offers "Holiday for Arts," a show and sale for original works in ceramics and glass, paintings, jewelry, fiber art, wood products, sculpture, and many other holiday goods. This is an opportunity to find a Christmas treat for loved ones who appreciate truly unique and singular presents that offer a personal touch.
Founded in the 1960s, Olive Hyde Art Gallery is located in the historic Mission San Jose area of Fremont. It is one of the several buildings that Olive Hyde, a native Californian born in San Francisco, erected in 1940. In 1962 she donated the building to City of Fremont for cultural and recreational purposes with a desire to preserve history and atmosphere of Mission San Jose. For the past 25 years the guild has supported this city art gallery through its various exhibits that serve as fundraiser for art scholarships, school programs and capital improvements like lightning for gallery.
"We support a city owned art gallery and make sure that we are able to provide scholarships for Fremont high school students and donate money to the student art and design show at Ohlone College," says Karen Tobin, president of Olive Hyde Art Guild. "Our effort is to support artists and art in our community," she adds.
Those who attend the opening night will enjoy food, wine, sweets and have first choice of the wonderful selection of gifts at special show prices. Attendees will also be eligible for a drawing to win an original painting by artist Maria Grazia Romeo.
For those who cannot make it to opening night, the show is open for public for the following two days. So, Christmas shoppers take note; this show is the ideal venue for the gift that is just right.
