The youth of Cub Scout Pack 112 are helping the local food bank of Alameda County by collecting hundreds of pounds of food. The efforts of the 50 boys in Pack 112, along with thousands of other Scouts, help out in the largest one-day food drive in the San Francisco Bay area.
This annual food drive called Scouting for Food involves Scouts from all over the Bay Area. Last year, over 30,000 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Ventures, Explorers and adult volunteers participated. Scouts collected over 1,000,000 pounds of food. The San Francisco Bay Area Council, which encompasses the City of San Francisco and the County of Alameda, collected over 200,000 pounds of food.
Food banks have come to rely upon this huge influx of food right before the holidays. Thanks to the Scouts and the project sponsors, many people who would otherwise go hungry have food for the holidays.
Pack 112 is part of the Mission Peak District of the San Francisco Bay Area Council. It is sponsored by Niles Congregational Church and has been serving the Niles community for over 13 years.
Look for a Scouting for Food flyer on your doors beginning Nov. 10. It will have information about the types of food we are collecting. Please place your food in a recycled bag or box, and put it outside in view of the street by 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.
