Juried Photography Exhibit

Dust off that camera and dig out that film. Here's a treat for all you shutterbugs out there. The Fremont Cultural Arts Council is hosting its annual photo contest for Fremont residents in October. For a small entry fee, amateur and professional photographers have a chance to have their artistic expressions judged by a distinguished panel of judges.
The Fremont Cultural Arts Council (FCAC) is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to further and support the practice and enjoyment of the fine arts in the Fremont community. In addition to active sponsorship of activities such as art in the schools, the FCAC provides a "clearinghouse" for the Arts and other charitable and non-profit activities in the area. The council promotes several activities like the contest and the Juried Photo Exhibit, which are in their 14th year. Last year, a record 300 entries made the events a big success.
While the contest is open to both amateur and professional photographers, the majority of entrants are just dedicated amateurs. There are no theme, color or size restrictions for the photographs which need to be framed and ready to hang prior to submission. Entry forms for the contest are available at the FCAC website - http://fremontculturalartscouncil.org and also at the FCAC office, 3375 Country Drive, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays; the Fremont Recreation Services office, 3300 Capitol Avenue Building B; the Fremont Main Library, and many photo processing counters.
Photographs have to be submitted at the FCAC office next weekend along with the entry fee of 5 dollars per photo. The winners and other photographs selected by the judges will be displayed at the Fremont Main Library from November 12 to December 7. Photographs selected by the panel of judges will be on display in the Library's reading area behind the main desk on the first floor. Serious photography enthusiasts should plan to attend the opening night exhibit on November 9 at the Fukaya Room from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This will also be an opportunity to rub shoulders with professional photographers and maybe pick up a tip or two.
The event is a joint venture of the FCAC with the Recreation Services of the City of Fremont and the Alameda County Library. Winners will receive cash prizes dependent on the number of entries. Last year over $1300 were awarded. While the contest is restricted to Fremont residents, visitors from other cities can participate provided they join one of the two photography clubs in Fremont - the Fremont Photographic Society and Photogenesis.
The Fremont Photography Club meets every fourth Wednesday of every month at the Fremont Cultural Arts Center at 3375 Country Drive, Fremont at 7:30 p.m. The club holds monthly competitions in different categories for prints, digital images and slides including color pictorial, monochrome, travel, photojournalism, nature, creative and special topic of the month. The images are critiqued and judged in a blind fashion by a different outside judge each month. Winners go on to compete in a bimonthly regional competition with winners from five other Bay Area camera clubs. Visitors are welcome to attend a few meetings and see if it is something they think they would enjoy.
Contest Photo Submission Dates (be sure to frame your entry):
Friday, October 12, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday, October 13, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sunday, October 14, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
