It's "Tee Time" in Niles for the Pink Flamingo Pee Wee Golf Tournament

By Terrie Rowe

Visitors to the Niles District of Fremont this Sunday will be well advised to keep an eye on the sky for moving objects. Putters will be swinging and golf balls flying as the ninth annual Pink Flamingo Pee Wee Golf Tournament gets underway.

Participants in this zany event putt their way through nine unique-themed holes sponsored by Niles residents and local businesses. Ingenuity abounds in the design of each hole, and every year brings a new level of creativity. According to event co-chair Nancy Haylock, "People outdo themselves one year after another."

Previous years have featured challenges such as the Port Hole, where a pirate urged players to "putt the plank" and then navigate water hazards, sand traps and sharks to get their ball into "port".

The Rabbit Hole featured a giant tea party with Alice and the Mad Hatter sipping tea while golfers attempted to putt a giant ball out of a teacup onto the green.

The popular Nat King Cole Hole defied duffers to whack their ball into a trash can suspended in the air. Successful players were rewarded by hearing their ball traveling through an irrigation pipe and then dropping at the feet of a giant Nat King Cole.

This year themes include Hole-a-Ween, The Environment-Hole, and Hole-Lotta-Grapes.
The Tournament ends at the Watering Hole, where refreshments will be served and prizes awarded for best-dressed duffer (wacky is encouraged), best hole, and best overall score.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit Niles Main Street, a non-profit association dedicated to the revitalization and preservation of the historic Niles District.

Tickets may be purchased on the day of the event at the Niles Cafe, 121 "I" Street in Niles and cost $10 for adults and $5 for children. Toddlers are free. Putters are provided at each hole, although golfers may bring a personal "lucky putter" - if it can handle some abuse.
