Play for a day, change for life

Union City has announced an offer that is hard to refuse. The new, state-of-the-art Sports Center is opening its doors to everyone for a free day of demonstrations, classes, sports and wellness activities. This offer will allow residents to peek into a lifestyle that can increase vitality and change attitudes. Just like the pitch on infomercials, the Family Health and Fitness Fair offers so much information and activity that it is bound to catch you with the infamous tag line, "but wait! There's more!" This 32,000 foot athletic facility has world class fitness equipment, basketball courts, yoga, pilates, circuit training, gymnastics and more.

Program coordinators Maynard Estrellado and Pierre Jetson spoke about the fair and emphasized the opportunities for all ages to enjoy the amenities of the new Sports Center and "a healthy lifestyle." Along with the facility and the many programs for healthy and active lives, Jetson emphasized that the fair is an opportunity for guests to speak with vendors who offer products and services that enhance personal wellbeing for all members of the family. One table will inform visitors of "SilverSneakers," a program that offers a blend of physical activity, healthy lifestyle and social programs for older adults. Included in this program is membership in the sports center.

"This is an opportunity for nonmembers and businesses to take a look at and use our facilities without obligation," says Jetson. He notes that visitors who arrive before 1 p.m. for the fair, will fill out a "drop-in" form, and then are considered day guests with full privileges to participate in all sports center activities including the exercise room (age 16 and up) and open gym - badminton and basketball. During fair hours, yoga, step aerobics, cardio hip-hop and SilverSneakers classes will be held. Parents with young children are asked to accompany them during classes and open gym. Union City's Sports Center does have child care services available for members while on site, but it will not be operating during the fair. Information will also be available about adult sports leagues that are now forming.
