Newark Days: Birthday Extravaganza!
By Mekala Raman
It's a celebration and the City of Newark, at age 52, knows how to put on a party. Four days of fun games, good food and live entertainment will fill the 14th Annual Newark Days Celebration. This party has expanded from its beginnings as a one day event that featured a parade, games, and birthday cake to celebrate Newark's incorporation. This year's festivities, "Cirque de Newark," will run from Thursday, September 20 at 1:30 p.m. to Sunday, September 23 at 5:45 p.m.,
Newark Days will kick-off on Thursday with a senior dance at 1:30 p.m. and the popular Kids Circus Parade, sponsored by Newark JayCees and Cargill Salt, at 6:30 p.m. A Carnival will feature a special price of $1 per ride that evening from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on MacGregor Field. On Friday, in addition to the Carnival, there will be food and game booths, a haystack, and art and stage shows.
Saturday's celebrations start bright and early at 8:30 a.m. with the 24th annual "Newark Mile," a 2.5 mile sprint along the parade route. Pre-registration for the event costs $12. Registration on the race day begins at 7:30 a.m. at the entrance to the Newark Community Center on Cedar Blvd. and costs $15. Entry forms are available at Newark Community Center, Newark Library, Newark Chamber of Commerce, League of Volunteers and athletic stores in Fremont, Newark, and Union City. Winners of the race receive trophies and awards.
Following the race, the city will gather for the big event of the weekend: "It's a Circus" 52nd Birthday Parade with Grand Marshal Officer John Boga marching down Newark Blvd. ending on Cedar Blvd. The day will also feature a Car and Truck Show, the Kids Circus Train, an appearance by the Raiderettes, the Newark-famous YOWZA band and many other events and contests. In keeping with the circus theme, during the weekend of festivities, mini circus shows will be performed by various artists. Circus contests and a quiz for festival-goers will net a well-versed circus aficionado a $100 prize.
The final day will include "Cirque de Newark" events plus a Cirque de Pooches Dog Contest, with prizes for Best Pet Tricks, Best Owner/Dog Look-Alike, and Best Dressed/Costume, and the Headline Show featuring Pride and Joy, Dancemakers, and Newark Symphonic Winds. The festival will also wind up with the cutting of the birthday cake at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday evening.
Be sure to come out and enjoy the games, food, contests and entertainment to celebrate with the City of Newark.
