Carlos Reyes in concert

By Mona Shah

Carlos Reyes and the Electric Symphony brings its diverse mix of Latin jazz and acoustic folk to Ohlone College's Outdoor Amphitheatre. Internationally acclaimed Carlos Reyes and the Electrik Symphony will perform with their band of musicians and dancers for one night only, Saturday, September 8 at 8 p.m.

Born in Paraguay, he began his musical education on the violin when he was 3. A few years later his father, a musical and national hero in his native country, dared young Carlos to learn the complicated 36 string native Paraguayan harp. Being called a child prodigy at an early age, he took his father's challenge seriously, purchased his first harp, and two weeks later earned a double encore at his first professional harp concert. Since then he has mastered many different instruments -- violin, guitar, bass, mandolin, keyboards and electronic devices. At the age of 14, he made his debut on harp with the Oakland Symphony and his debut on the violin with the Oakland Youth Symphony. He has performed both as solo artist and with various music groups all over the Bay Area, the United States and Europe.

Reyes has worked in the recording industry on commercials, as a solo artist, and in providing instrumental background music for the acclaimed children's shows Sesame Street and Villa Alegre when he was still in his teens.

The concert is sponsored by the Fremont Bank Foundation and presented by the Fremont Symphony Guild with additional support from Ohlone College.
