By Biff Jones

Newark National of District 14 lost a tough opening round game in Section 3 Little League Tournament play in Palo Alto. Their opponent was a team from San Lorenzo.

Newark opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning starting with a lead-off walk to Bryan Sawamura. After one out, shortstop Sammy Sood deposited the ball over the left-center field fence for a two-run home run. San Lorenzo answered in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own. Singles by D.J. Suto, Nico Loza, and Eddie Villegas plated one run, with a second run scoring when Nathan Reimer reached on an error by Newark. San Lorenzo would then score four times in the bottom of the second to take a commanding 6-2 lead.

Singles by Bradley Pruitt and B.J. Hewlin followed by Cody Tezan reaching first on another error, loaded the bases. This set up RBI's by Soto and Loza who hit a sacrifice fly and a double respectively. Singles by Jordan Lattimer and Villegas finished the scoring in the second. National got one back in the fourth then tied the score with a three-run fifth inning. However, Newark could not push across the go-ahead run, despite loading the bases in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth after one out, Tezan coaxed a walk and promptly stole second base. In came special pinch runner Kyle Gumataotao to run for Tezan. Suto then stepped to the plate and singled to right field. Before the Newark fielder could throw home, Gumataotao scored from second base on the play to give San Lorenzo a 7-6 victory.

Offensive stars for Newark were Sawamura with two hits plus the walk, Jessie Ibarra with a sacrifice bunt in the one run fourth, Josh Roman three hits, including a double, Patrick Taylor two hits, Derrick Casey, a hit and a walk, and a double from Manny Tucker. Mathew Luchesi pitched into the fifth for NNLL and was relieved by David Stewart.

Newark National would now have to win through the loser's bracket of this double elimination tournament, to advance to Divisional play. Up next for Newark was Tracy American, with the loser going home for the season. Tracy started the game with a two-run first. National answered with a resounding six-run bottom of the first inning. Three consecutive singles by Sawamura, Casey, and Sood led off the first, after which Roman and Taylor reached on errors. After a couple of outs, a walk to Luchesi and another single in the inning by Sawamura ended the scoring.

Tracy then added single runs in the second and third innings while Newark got one in their half of the second on Roman's home run. NNLL closed out their scoring in the fifth with two runs when Tony Sanchez and Donovan Mosier reached on errors which were followed by Sawamura's fourth single of the game and a double from Casey. Tracy tried to make the game interesting by scoring two in the top of the sixth, but it would not be enough as their season would end in a 9-6 defeat.

For Newark, the next game was a rematch with San Lorenzo on Sunday, July 22nd, and they were defeated 15-5 to end their season. The game was called after five innings because of the ten-run mercy rule.
