Around and about
Another Santa Cruz
By Pat Kite
Thinking about a summer Santa Cruz meander? You don't have to go to the Boardwalk to enjoy yourself. Instead, for only ten dollars, you can park all day by the Boardwalk and take a 15-minute stroll on the walkway of the nearby San Lorenzo River and onto Pacific Avenue. The lovely, sparkling water of this river itself is relaxing and extremely serene if one wants to escape from the chaos of the Boardwalk.
What's Pacific Avenue? It's a long tree-shaded street of small shops, charming restaurants, coffee shops and kiosks, plus benches to complete the peaceful, carefree and relaxing scenery. Special spots on Pacific Avenue include a used book store carrying an extensive collection of records, DVD's, CD's, audio tapes, VCR's and books-all for a reasonable price. Further down the street is a unique shop specializing in perfume concoctions. Here, you can create your own personalized scents while sitting comfortably on an enticing velvet chair and sampling tasty snacks.
In addition to these exclusive shops, many other extraordinary stores carry specialized items. If you're looking for more fun in the sun, on the second and fourth Sundays of the month, an antique sidewalk sale includes a delightful mix of jewelry, costumes, clothing, pottery and Native American antiques. For those who have never explored beyond the Boardwalk and are looking for another attraction, discovery of this other side of Santa Cruz will entice you to return again and again.
