Newark National Little League Minors use loser's bracket to advance

By Biff Jones

Defeated by Mission San Jose, 8-5, earlier in the double elimination tournament, the Minors (10-11 year olds) of NNLL needed to win three consecutive games to advance to Sectional play of the 2007 older Minor League players Little League Tournament.

They started with a 13-2 victory over Niles-Centerville to win the loser's bracket championship and put them into the winner's bracket championship game. They now would have to defeat MSJLL twice. In the first game, Newark prevailed 6-4 to force the "what if" game and the right to move on to Sectionals.

In the final game, NN got off to a strong start as they scored four runs in both the first and second innings to take an early 8-0 lead. The eight run early lead helped Newark pitcher, Matt Luchesi, settle into a groove and limit Mission to only one run over five innings of work. NN would score three more runs in the bottom of fifth to put the mercy rule into effect and make the final score 11-1.

Other players for Newark are Donovan Mosier, Derrick Casey, Bryan Sawamura, Sammy Sood, Josh Roman, Todd Dubeck, Patrick Taylor, David Stewart, Jessie Ibara, Manny Tucker and Val Torio.

Players from Mission are Akshay Agharkar, Tylan Ahmed, Trevor Brown, Dillion Collins, Vikram Dharasker, Christian Flores, Tyler Johnson, Nikhol Menon, Wyatt Ott, Martin Padilla, Arjun Sarker, Cheyenne Walker and Jacob Walter.

NN Manager, Tom Dubeck, and Coaches, Dave Taylor and Andy Dubeck, will lead the team into Sectional play starting this Thursday, July 19th at 5:30 p.m. The Sectionals will be played at Palo Alto Little League, 3672 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. A win Thursday puts the Newark Minors in the winner's bracket game on Saturday, July 21st at 9 a.m. A loss sends them to the loser's bracket game Saturday at 12 noon.
