Niles-Centerville Junior All Stars Win District 14 Title

Submitted By Jill Erickson

The Junior Division All Stars from Niles-Centerville Little League (NCLL) claimed the 2007 CA District 14 Junior Championship by defeating Warm Springs Little League (WSLL) 9-1 on July 8, and will now enter the 2007 CA Section 3 Junior All Star Tournament starting July 16. The Junior TOC Cinderella magic in Warm Springs two weeks ago disappeared in the summer All Star tournament.

Niles-Centerville went undefeated through the tournament, beating Fremont American, Mission San Jose (MSJLL) and then Warm Springs to capture the title. NCLL had a first round bye, then beat Fremont American 13-2 behind the pitching of AJ Bagoje and Matt Knight. Billy Nevin went 3-5 scoring 3 runs, while Jesse Nohr was 2-2 with 2 RBIs. Bryce Fryan frustrated the FALL pitchers with a hit followed by 4 walks.

MSJLL had been a scoring machine, crushing Newark National LL 19-0 and then beating WSLL 16-10. In the Championship bracket game on July 3, Mission San Jose jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, until NCLL scored 4 runs in the 4th inning. NCLL's Nevin only allowed 3 hits in the 6 innings he pitched before reaching his pitch count of 95. Scoring 3 more runs in the top of the 7th, NCLL took an 8-2 lead but would need all those runs as MSJLL came back to tie it. The game was called for darkness tied 8-8 going into the 8th inning.... What better way to spend July 4 than watching baseball? After a scoreless 8th inning, NCLL scored 6 runs on 12 batters in the top of the 9th, then Justin Dhanda shut down MSJLL to end the long game.

Warm Springs won their first game, then lost to MSJLL to fall into the Elimination Bracket. WSLL then shutout both Centerville American and Centerville National, and slipped by their MSJLL rematch into the championship game against NCLL.

The Championship game between NCLL and WSLL on July 8 was a pitching duel for the first few innings, with NCLL leading 3-0 after 4 innings. NCLL broke it open with scoring in the 5th and 6th innings for a final score of 9-1 over Warm Springs. Two doubles each by Sean O'Hare and Cody Lebon, and another by Casey Jennings contributed to 7 of the 9 RBIs for the NCLL All Stars. Bryce Fryan used all 96 pitches for his complete game, only allowing 1 run for his team to win the championship.

All games of the 2007 CA Section 3 Tournament are being played this week at Vallejo Mill Elementary School, home to Niles-Centerville Little League.District 67 (Tracy American) beat District 45 (Union City) 13-5 in the Friday night opener, and District 52 (Half Moon Bay) beat District 57 (San Ramon Valley) 13-2 on Saturday morning.

In a close and exciting game on Saturday afternoon, Niles-Centerville beat Tracy American6-3 to advance to the semi-finals on Sunday against Half Moon Bay. For Niles-Centerville, Billy Nevin pitched a solid 6 innings and Cody Lebon made an impressive over the shoulder catch at the center field fence in the 1st inning. There was a lot of action on the base paths for both teams, and the entire sectional tournament promises to give baseball fans something to remember.

If you are a member of a CA District 14 League, come on out and root Niles-Centerville on. If you are not a member of a CA District 14 league, come on out and enjoy a great tournament.
