District 14 Senior Little League All-Star play

By Biff Jones

After receiving byes in the first round, Senior All-Stars (15-16 year olds) from Mission
San Jose defeated Newark National in a second round game. The game was called after
four and a half innings because of the ten run mercy rule. Final score was 11-1.

MSJ opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Josh Burnett led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Brian Wihl. This was followed by three consecutive hits: Greg Oliveria singled and John Nolan and Spenser Peterson each doubled to put MSJ up 3-0 after two innings. Bottom of the third saw Mission tack on two more runs as Jacob Andresen doubled, Burnett again reached via a base on balls and Wihl doubled both of them home to give Mission a 5-0 lead.

NN's only run came in the top of the fourth on a walk to Matt Kaufman followed by a single from starting pitcher Cameron Steele. Niles catcher David Peixoto sacrificed the runners along before Matt's brother and relief pitcher, Kurt Kaufman, sent Matt home with a sacrifice fly ball. MSJ closed out the scoring in their half of the fourth when the first two batters in the inning, pitcher Eric Gwynn and Andresen, were hit by a pitch. After two outs, the next six hitters got on base safely. Oliveria reached on an error, Nolan singled, Peterson singled, David Roche walked, Ryan Mahuron doubled and Lucas singled to give MSJ an 11-1 lead going into the top of the fifth. NN then went quietly in their half of the fifth to end the game.

Eric Fuhs contributed by scoring twice for Mission in two pinch running appearances. One of the runs came on a steal of home as he and Burnett executed a double steal. Gwynn allowed only one hit over the five innings he worked for the victors. Manager for MSJ is Frank Rowell and the Coach is Frank Gwynn.

Other starters for NN were Kyle Veloza, Donny Evans, Mason Pieteri and Robert Landrath. The Niles reserves were Justin Sa, Felix Okey, Josh Schraug and Adam McKennan. The Manger is Greg Kaufman and the Coach is Brian Robinson.

Next up for MSJ is the winner of Niles-Centerville and Fremont American at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, July 5th at Newark National Field (Newark Memorial High School). NN
plays tonight, July 3rd, at 5:30 p.m. at Mission San Jose Field (Gomes Elementary School, Fremont). Their opponent will be the winner of Centerville National and Newark American, in this double elimination tournament.
