Chabot College presents summer youth sports camp
By Patricia Russell
Chabot College in Hayward is pleased to present its seventh annual Summer Youth Sports Program (SYSP) beginning Monday, June 25, through Friday, July 27, 2007. The program is currently recruiting at least 230 participants for the program and at least 80% of the participants must be low-income youth (as defined by federal income guidelines) between the ages of 10 and 16 years old.
The SYSP program was designed to provide positive experiences for youth and boost self-esteem and self-confidence, while also providing every participant with a safe place to grow and learn. The 2007 program, in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club of San Leandro, will provide sports instruction integrated with a vibrant curriculum concerning health issues, nutrition, disease prevention, alcohol and substance awareness, and higher education and career planning.
Included in the program is limited bus transportation to and from the Chabot campus, breakfast, and a snack through the duration of the program, which runs from 8:00 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. each Monday through Friday, except during the week of July 2 when the program will observe the 4th of July holiday.
"We are extremely grateful to Kaiser Permanente, California First Bank and Trust, 'Team Up for Youth,' Hayward Rotary, and the San Leandro Boys and Girls Club, for their continued support of this important program for youngsters in the region," says Gerald Shimada, the college*s Dean of Special Program and the SYSP coordinator.
The SYSP program is made possible with the support of a $50,000 grant from the Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit program in southern Alameda County. The grant is part of Kaiser Permanente*s commitment to building a healthy community through a variety of programs and activities.
Applications for SYSP are currently available in Room 221 of Building 200 on the Chabot College campus.
