Two local women receive scholarships
By Karen Nickell
The American Business Women's Association (ABWA), Pathfinder chapter in Fremont presented two scholarships to local women in Alameda County. Of 19 submissions, ABWA National Headquarters chose two recipients, Michele Sanborn and Melissa Munoz. Both scholarship recipients received $2,000.
Michele, an Irvington High School (Fremont) graduate has been an excellent student serving as Senior Class vice president and co-captain of the varsity softball team. She spends many hours in support of Guide Dogs for the Blind and raised her own travel funds to be a Student Ambassador in Europe for the People to People program.
Melissa was highlighted in a television show "Driven to Make a Difference" and she lives up to the title. Top honors in academics did not slow her ability to excel on the athletic field, garnering 10 varsity letters in Basketball, Water Polo and Softball; voted Most Outstanding Athlete for 2007 at James Logan High School (Union City), Melissa has been selected for six all-league teams during her tenure. Her work with developmentally disabled athletes, elementary school age children and others sets her apart as a truly outstanding individual.
