Dodgers Take Niles Centerville Little League Junior Championship

By Jill Erickson

June 9, 2007: NCLL Closing Day - The Junior title will be decided between two of District 14's best junior teams.... the first half champion Red Sox and the second half champion Dodgers, both with 20-4 season records. It was no surprise to see both teams put their aces on the mound, Red Sox Casey Jennings and Dodgers Bryce Fryan. And it was great to see all the NCLL fans come out early to watch this 8:30 a.m. championship game before closing ceremonies. The Dodgers prevailed by a 12-6 score.

The Dodgers jumped out to a 3 run lead in the top of the 1st as Jesse Nohr hit a smashing 2 RBI double. The Red Sox countered with 2 runs in the bottom including a mammoth Home Run over the center field fence by Jennings. The Dodgers added two more runs in the 2nd when Fryan's ground rule double went over the fence on one bounce, followed by Cody Lebon's triple.

The Dodgers took advantage of Red Sox errors and put the game out of reach with 5 more runs on 4 hits in the 5th inning, including Austin Guttery's 2 RBI double. Matt Knight came in to relieve Jennings for the final 2 and a half innings.

The Rod Sox started a rally in the bottom of the 5th, scoring 3 runs on 3 hits as Fryan was running up his pitch count. Jack McCoy had a 2 RBI single, followed by Josh Rozul's RBI single.

Justin Dhanda came in to shut the door on the Sox, facing 7 batters for the final 7 outs. He was helped out with some great defensive plays. The 5th inning ended when Trent Jackson threw the batter out at first from right field. In the 6th, a perfect 6-4-3 double play was executed by Fryan to Nohr to Alex Rich. Austin Miller took control of the 7th inning, making catches in left field for all 3 outs to end the game.

With a 21-4 record, our NCLL Dodgers continue their season with postseason play in the District 14 Tournament of Champions beginning June 21 against the Newark National Little League Pirates.
