Scholarships awarded by League of Volunteers and Newark Arts Council
Submitted By Shirley Sisk
The League of Volunteers (LOV) and the Newark Arts Council awarded $900 in scholarships to Tri-City graduating high school seniors in music and photography. For the first time, there was a tie for the award in music. Newark Arts Council, a division of LOV, awarded the Fred Jeuneman Music Scholarship to American High School clarinetist Julia Damron. Julia has received many honors, including selection to the Northern California Band Association All-Northern honor band 3 years in a row and the Fremont USD honor band for 4 years.
She has performed with the CSUEB Youth Orchestra and various concerts with the Newark Symphonic Winds and Ohlone Community Band. Sharing the music award and also receiving a $250 scholarship provided by Arts Council member Mary Lynn Pelican, was pianist Lily Chen of James Logan High School. Lily performed Chopin's Nocturne Op. 9, No. 2 and a beautiful contemporary Chinese piece - Moonlight over River. A special honorarium of $150 was awarded to Newark Memorial High School vocalist, Allison Moore. The $250 Dan and Marie Archer Scholarship for photography went to Shanda Modrall of Newark Memorial High. These beautiful photos will be on display at the annual Newark Days Celebration, September 20 - 23. |
