Harvey Green is a launching pad in Memorial Day tourney
By Geoff Stanford
As the 12- year old and under, Marina of Salinas All Star team squared off with the Pleasanton Toros on Sunday in the second round of the FBI tournament in Fremont, balls were flying out of left field. After a quiet top of the 1st inning, Marina's second batter, Dante Murphy, stepped into the batter's box. He tattooed a fastball over the left field fence, beginning the scoring and opening the flood gates. An RBI single by Marlena Rose stretched the lead to two runs, one of her two run scoring base hits. Two batters later, Josiah Pulealii belted another fastball over the left center field wall and Marina led 4- 0 after one inning.
The Toros answered in the bottom of the second when a single to right by Kyle Brunette scored Jack Renteria cutting the lead to 3. An amazing double play was turned on a line drive when Marina's shortstop, Barric Morris, snagged the shot and threw a dart to first base. The next hitter smashed a ball into the hole and Morris again flashed his glove to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Jorge Avila doubled off the wall in left. A bunt base hit and a fielding error brought in Marina's fifth run, and some timely hitting and mistakes in the field allowed another three runs to score, stretching the lead to 8- 1.
Toros' catcher, Eric Toombs, led the third inning off with a single to right and came around to score on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to 8- 2. The next couple innings were quiet until Marina broke through once again in the bottom of the fourth. Dante Murphy scored again on an RBI single, and a two- run double by Santos stretched the lead to 12- 2, where the game ended due to the ten- run- rule.
Pleasanton will advance in the loser's bracket to play the other Pleasanton team on Memorial Day, and Marina will advance to play the winner of an upcoming game. Results of the tournament can be found at Fremontbaseball.org
