Annual Fine Art and Design student show

By Margaret Stainer

A highlight of the year is currently being showcased at The Louie Meager Art Gallery, at Ohlone College. The best student works from art and design classes of the last three semesters are being exhibited at the annual Fine Art and Design Student Show. Works have been selected by the full time Fine Art Faculty: Cynthia Luckoski, Denise Owen, Paul Mueller, and Katherine Frank. From approximately 400 applicants, about 230 pieces have been juried into the show.

This year, the show is dominated by drawings, including over 60 drawings from three classes taught by Denise Owen, Deirdre White, and Margaret Stainer. Toned realist portraits and muted toned skeleton studies in charcoals are the most stunning. Ceramics, gorgeous cast glass and bronze sculpture this year are quite beautiful including serious "art ceramics" as well as playful "fun" pieces.

Seven functional art chairs fill the gallery floor spaces with bright, gaudy color, such as Rochelle Lozano's Pretty in Pink, a hot pink straw chair with a glittery, fluffy pink faux fur "dress" and beads, bows, and high heel shoes pouring out of the seat. Other "art" chairs include Shalini Mehta's Ice Cream Chair, P. Alegado's green turf chaise lounge 19th Hole (relaxing chair after a good round of golf); and Caroline Rejouan's bright orange, blue and yellow faux fur swivel chair. These chairs were made in Katherine Frank's 3D design class.

Many professional level Interior Design client presentation boards, Graphic Design projects and posters are included in the show. Computer generated images shown are truly miraculous. These Photoshop and Illustrator images and brochures are ready to be published.

Students not only compete in the juried show, but also gallery-sit during open hours. Margaret Stainer's Museum and Gallery operations classes install the exhibits and are responsible for "hands on" tasks of the gallery. This huge student show has been a big success due to many volunteers hours and weeks of installation..

Don't miss this excellent exhibit. It is a dazzling reflection of Ohlone's creative abilities and amazing student talent.
