Tech Trek Scholarships awarded
Fremont Branch AAUW, the American Association of University Women, has announced this year's scholarship awards to Tech Trek held at Mills College in Oakland, California. Tech Trek is a math/science camp designed to develop interest, excitement and self-confidence in young women who will enter eighth grade in the fall. It is a one week camp held each year on the Mill's College campus in June. In December 2006 seventh grade teachers in public and private schools in the Tri-cities area were asked to nominate girls who met Tech Trek's qualifications of showing and interest in math or science. The nominated girls were asked to submit an application and write an essay on "What Science Means To Me In My Future." The selection process included reviewing applications, essays and an interview. An AAUW committee selected the winners. Awards were presented at the AAUW annual Women's History Event on March 24. The recipients of the $750 scholarships were Ureka Ajawara and Jade Santos of Holy Spirit School in Fremont and Alejandra Alaniz from Walters Junior High also in Fremont. Victoria Rodriguez of Holy Spirit School was selected as the alternate. If anyone wants more information about Tech Trek they can go to www.aauwfremontbranch.org or call 510.728-9700.
