Easter at Ardenwood
This year, we changed our clocks early to be in synch with Daylight Savings Time. At Ardenwood Historic Farm in Fremont, the clock is always turned to bygone days of pastoral elegance of the 19th century Patterson House and its surrounding farmlands. The hands of this clock are firmly fixed on fun for the entire family and Easter Sunday promises a special day of activities for everyone.
Spring is a time for renewal and new, young animals on the farm are a good indicator of this time of year. Along with new sheep and goats, its time to meet young cuddly bunnies that are seeing their first year of life. In the tradition of Victorian Easter activities, Ardenwood will host a series of special family events beginning with egg decorating (eggs supplied by Ardenwood staff), then a search for the magical "Golden Egg" that will bring a full year of happiness and good luck to the lucky person who finds it; clues will be given every few minutes by Naturalist Eric Nicholas. Completing the Easter festivities, an egg roll on the lawn in front of a big white house at Ardenwood will mimic the 128-year tradition on the lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C. As Nicholas notes, "They have a big white house with a large lawn and so do we!"
Following Easter activities, the farm will still be open and hungry animals will demand attention. For those who want to help feed the livestock, dinner comes early with a 3 o'clock meal. Ardenwood volunteers and naturalists will be happy to assist visitors who want to help satisfy the farmyard's afternoon hunger pangs.
