One person's discards can be someone else's treasures

By Angela Yang, Manager of Fremont Libraries

Ever heard that saying before? Well, it's certainly become the motto for the Fremont Friends of the Library's book sales. Some of the discards are indeed treasures for other people. The Fremont Friends of the Library is a volunteer organization that started 41 years ago. The Friends have been working on hauling, selecting, sorting, organizing and pricing the donated books for the big Book Sale. Many of the Friends have donated their labor and love to this activity for 10-20 years. They have sold gently-used books - some library discards, but mostly donations from private individuals - and they have raised close to $200,000 for the library. The proceeds go directly to our Fremont libraries and the Bookmobile that makes many stops in the City of Fremont to support the library's services and library programs, as well as the acquisition of a variety of library collections.

The Fremont Friends of the Library volunteers first started working out of a member's Fremont garage to generate funding to support the library and the joy of reading. They took in less than $1000 annually in the beginning. "These fund-raising sales enabled the library to add needed materials and provide many great programs such as the Children's Summer Reading Program; Bookleggers Program; programs for senior adults, teens, children and their families; and our special Annual Tea Party to welcome new Fremont District teachers to the Fremont community. Their hard work and dedication have greatly enhanced the quality of life in Fremont.

In order for these book sales to remain successful, the Friends encourage residents to undertake a periodic "cleaning project" to donate books, records, tapes and videos they no longer want to the Fremont Friends of the Library. You may bring your tax-deductible donations to the Friends of the Library location on Wednesdays between the hours of 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The Friends Book Sale site is located in the former main library building at Central Park, next to the Teen Center, off Paseo Padre Parkway at Sailway Drive. All donations are gladly accepted. Members of the Fremont Friends of the Library are confident the donations will become treasures for the book loving neighbors. The next Book Sale will be held on Friday, April 20, 7-9 pm; Saturday, April 21, 10 am-3 pm; and Sunday, April 22, 12 noon -3 pm.
