County Commission on the Status of Women to Host Summit
In honor of Women's History Month, The Alameda County Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will hold its 2007 Summit on Saturday, March 31, at the Fremont Marriott Hotel.
Titled "Celebrating Women, Empowering Girls," the free event will engage women with educational workshops and a special video presentation by Tricia McMahon, co-founder and director of HERS Breast Cancer Foundation.
Congresswoman Barbara Lee is the Honorary Chair, and there will be a special presentation in honor of Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "Pelosi has indeed made history as Speaker of the House," says CSW Vice Chair Desrie Campbell. "And we wanted to make sure that we celebrated her important achievement."
There will be an afternoon of informative workshops tackling such issues as domestic violence and breast health, as well as a panel discussion on women in politics. Members from the National Women_s Political Caucus (NWPC), the National Organization for Women (NOW) and Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA) will be represented.
The Alameda County Junior Commission that kicked off last July will host workshops for young women on body image, health and other teen topics. Mass Mutual, SF Bay Area Agency, Fremont_s Regional Occupation Program, and Bay Area BusinessWoman News will offer information on financial services, education, and media.
"Alameda County Commission on the Status of Women supports all women throughout Alameda County," says Campbell. "It follows suit that the workshops would embrace the issues that the Commission is passionate about."
The Alameda County Commission on the Status of Women was established by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors in February 1975, and honors the vision of the founding 300 women and women's groups who worked tirelessly to create an organization to provide advocacy, outreach and education for women and girls.
The 2007 Summit will be held on Saturday, March 31, from 1-6pm at the Fremont Marriott, 46100 Landing Parkway, in Fremont. Admission is free, however, due to limited space, advance registration is required. To reserve, call (510) 259-3871 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
