Former city manager tries for Newark City Council

Deadline nears for applications for Newark council seat vacancy

With the abrupt resignation of councilmember Sue Johnson, the Newark City Council is seeking applicants to serve the remainder of her term ending November of this year. As the March 23 deadline approaches, formal applications have been accepted from just a few citizens. Among them is a bit of a surprise; recently retired city manager Al Huezo.

In his statement to the city council, Mr. Huezo cites his "passion for public service" and an ability to "add value to the decision-making process..." His impressive resume includes 31 years of service to the City of Newark both in government and community service organizations, nine at the helm of the city and a healthy working relationship with staff, the mayor and council.

For those interested in filling the vacancy, official application forms are available on the City's website at www.newark.org and by contacting the City clerk's office at 37101 Newark Boulevard, 5th floor, (510) 790-7266. Applicants must be a Newark resident and a registered voter at the time the application is filed.

Applications must be signed by the applicant and received in the city clerk's Office no later than Friday, March 23, 2007, 5 p.m.
