Artists show off work at Textile Exhibit
By Charlotte Flowers-Weston
The Olive Hyde Art Guild is no stranger to art-minded Fremont residents. Its goal is to promote an interest in and appreciation for the visual arts, assisting with many programs and activities at the Olive Hyde Art Gallery. For the month of March, the Guild will host the 39th Annual Textile Exhibit, featuring the art works of 18 different artists.
A reception held on Friday March 2nd to kick off the exhibit allowed visitors to meet and greet the artists whose works are on display. According to gallery hostess Carol Travares, the weekend brought quite a few visitors to the exhibit. "We had over sixty visitors on Saturday and Sunday combined," said Tavares.
Every gallery room is occupied with collections of textile art created with hand-dyed fabrics, threads, fibers, silk tapestries, carpets, and even quilts. Textile artists use various techniques to create reproductions from jewelry and scarves to sculpture and wood. Some of the fine pieces of textile art on exhibit include, "The Fragrance of Spring," by Linda Cline, "Slow boat to China," by Norma Anderson Fox, "Poetry in Motion," by Peggy Moulton, and "Red Sky Quilt," by Karen Lusnak.
Other featured artists include, Marie Grace, Jill Bergantz, Beverly Harrington, Jessica Cadkin, Mimi Crow, Gertrud Turner, Jan Whittman, Denise Oyama Miller, Kathy Strauss, Martha Matthiesen, Paul Lynch, Dawn Hope, and Gloria Kim.
All artwork on display can be purchased at the gallery - prices range from $40 - $6,500 - upon completion of the exhibit.
