Happy Anniversary Service League Volunteers

Washington Hospital Service League held their 52nd annual meeting on February, 5. For the last 52 years, the volunteers have helped make Washington Hospital what it is today. The event was an opportunity for the hospital to give thanks for the significant contributions service league volunteers make on a daily basis.

Volunteers received a gracious welcome and thank you from Patricia Danielson, RHIT, Washington Township Health Care District Board President and Neil Marks, Senior Associate Administrator. Members of the Service League also performed several song and dance numbers that entertained and delighted the crowd.

The Service League Volunteers donated more than 49,000 hours of service to the Hospital in 2006. Over the last half century, the Service League has provided 1.6 million hours of service and given nearly $2 million to the Hospital. The Service League prides itself as one of the first groups to provide seed money for new Hospital projects. Some of these projects have helped support Washington Hospital Foundation, Washington Radiation Oncology Center and the Community Health Resource Library.

"This year, the Service League Board of Directors voted that they wanted to be the first Hospital group to make a pledge to the Foundation for the new Critical Care and Emergency Room building fund," says Anna Elola, Director of Volunteer Services. "The Service League has pledged $300,000 over the next five years."

Service League President, Cherie Gamardo and Service League Treasurer Claire Moore presented a $65,000 check as a first installment of the pledge to Neil Marks and Maria Huezo, Washington Hospital Foundation President at the event.

When the Hospital opened in 1958, the Service League volunteers were ready to greet the first patients and help wherever they were needed. The Service League's goal was - and still is - to support the Hospital by assisting patients, visitors, and staff and raising money to help purchase needed equipment for hospital departments.

The Service League volunteers also bring a very human touch - freely offering a cheerful smile, friendly attitude and thousands of hours of service to the Hospital's patients, visitors and staff. This year's annual meeting also took the time to recognize volunteers celebrating 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 year anniversaries with the Service League. Shirley Beaudreau, Elda Pedroza, and Ruth McGihon received special honors for 30 years of service with the Service League.

New officers of the 2007 - 2008 Service League Board of Directors were also recognized at the meeting. Parliamentarian, Marge Trebotich; Treasurer, Claire Moore; 2nd Vice President, Andy Estevez; 1st Vice President, Marina Jordan; and President Cherie Gamardo received a warm welcome from the attendees.
