Gomes girls win a thriller
John Gomes Elementary Girls basketball team continued its undefeated season by posting a 19-17 victory over visiting Mission San Jose Elementary last Thursday.
Gomes, now 6-0, came back from a 15-10 deficit with 4:34 left in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Gomes came out with a strong full court press the last two minutes of the game which MSJ had no answer for.
Guards Blair Akerland, Nichole Tan, and Sophia Law were instrumental in keeping the pressure on while point guard Shannon Chua was masterful on the fast break leading all scorers with 11 points.
Forwards Ariel Tsang, Amy Ribar, and Chenoa Martinez kept the ball moving around the perimeter while centers Lynn Huang and Ivonnie Shih held high ground in the low post.
First year players Juliana McCuaig, Allie Mederios, and Zohal Sarwary played tenacious defense with a strong presence at mid-court. Gomes now enters the second half of their season and will be hosting the Gomes Invitational Tournament March 2 - 3.
