Renegades continue quest for conference crown and top seed
By Biff Jones
Ohlone College Renegades men's basketball team improved its record to 22-2 and 6-1 in Coast Conference North Division play, with a convincing 79-62 victory over Canada College last Saturday evening at Epler Gymnasium on the Ohlone campus in Fremont. By winning, the Renegades were able to keep pace with City College of San Francisco for first place in the division, while trying to secure a number one seed in the upcoming California JC post season tournament.
After falling behind early in the first half, the Renegades built a 42-26 half-time lead behind the three point shooting of 6'3" sophomore guard Patrick Collier. Ohlone was able to maintain the sixteen point lead through most of the second stanza as Collier continued his hot three point shooting to finish with 19 points. Jermaine Smith, 6'9'' sophomore center out of Fremont's Irvington High School, added 12 points with stellar post play.
Next up for Ohlone will be an away game, tomorrow, the 31st, against Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, before they return home for the much awaited rematch with archrival Chabot College of Hayward. Chabot upset the Renegades 82-69 back on January 10th to give Ohlone its second loss of the season and first loss in the conference. It also knocked the Renegades out of the number one ranking in Northern California. Game time is 5 p.m. this Saturday, February 3 in Epler Gymnasium on the Ohlone Campus, 43600 Mission Blvd., Fremont. Admission is $5. Come out and support your favorite team in this East Bay Derby.
