Gomes girls roll
The John Gomes 5th and 6th grade girl's basketball team is off to a fine start of the 2006-2007 Interscholastic Basketball season.
Gomes girls opened the season with a convincing 21-9 win over cross-town opponent Patterson. The girls then followed with a 17-14 victory over Maloney. After winter break the girls came back well rested and ready to start play with opponents in the Mission San Jose attendance area.
Rival Chadbourne Elementary came out ready to play but ultimately lost that showdown, 13-8. Gomes then took on Azaveda Elementary in non- Mission attendance area action and escaped with a 23-19 win after being up 14 points in the first quarter.
Gomes is led by returning starter Shannon Chua in the point position. Chua's fine play is complimented by second-year players Amy Ribar, Ariel Tsang, Cassie Broadwin, and Blair Akerland. First-year players Lynn Huang and Ivonnie Shih give Gomes some much needed height in the front, while Juliana McCuaig and Allie Medeiros take care of business in the back court.
Chenoa Martinez, Nicole Tan, Sophia Law, and Zohal Sarwary round out the team and play tenacious defense. Gomes next opponent is Mission Valley in what is sure to be a classic match-up.
