"Painting enables me to express my joy in the beauty and diversity of life. Nature creates endless patterns and designs in both muted and vivid colors. I try to weave these elements into a painting that conveys my excitement and joy in the world around me."...Clarice Roberts.
Roberts began painting as a teenager and for the past 30 years has dedicated much of her life to painting beautiful watercolor paintings. Born in 1922 and brought up in Santa Clara, she graduated from UC Berkeley Phi Beta Kappa, with a degree in Economics then went on to teach for over 20 years.
Her two sons Keith and Doug have admired their mother's art from as early on as they can remember. Her oldest son, Doug remembers posing for many of his mother's paintings. "My brother and I served several times as subjects for area art association painting sessions," said Doug.
Doug said after his father died, his mother began to travel. "She met my step-father, Earl Serdahl, and they traveled around the world several months a year for almost 20 years," he said.
Roberts combined her love of travel with painting by taking photographs and then painting them in her studio. "She has paintings of Masai warriors in Africa and cityscapes in Afghanistan," said Doug. "One set of portraits from Africa resulted in a one-woman show at the DeYoung Museum, at the entrance to the African Hall," he adds.
Roberts stopped traveling in her 80's but continued to work, painting a new picture every week.
On Thursday, January 4, 2007 the Hayward Chamber will host an Artist's Reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce at 22561 Main Street, Hayward.
Roberts will hold two artwork exhibits at the Chamber. From December 29 through February 15, 2007, her watercolors will be on exhibit followed by artwork of her worldwide travels on exhibit from February 6 to March 29. A full color catalog of this exhibit will be available at the reception.
