Hayward recognizes area artists
by Charlotte Flowers-Weston
When planners designed the new Hayward City Hall they included plans for a very unique art gallery where local and other artists can feature their work on a rotating basis throughout the year.
The gallery, located on the lobby level of Hayward City Hall was named in honor of the late John O'Lague for his lifetime service as an artist, Hayward Library Commissioner, and a community activist. O'Lague died in 1997 at age 72.
The current exhibit, Winter Show features the work of a husband and wife team, Joy Faye Rowan and husband Bruce Barrett.
Roses have been a symbol of beauty for centuries. Along one wall in the Galleria, are astonishing life-like pictures of enormous roses in colors of red, white, and pink, taken by Joy Faye Rowan.
Rowan says with a combination of color and fragrance, the rose gives an aura of goodness, beauty, and freshness. "This is what draws me to really look at them and make portraits of them. I wish to embody that experience of their mystery and fleeting beauty - going beyond what could be shown in a conventional photograph," said Rowan.
Along the same wall are amazing nature pictures by Rowan's husband Bruce Barrett. Barrett, a native of San Francisco knew at an early age that he wanted to be a photographer. Even before high school he purchased and started playing with a contact printer. His parents allowed him to build a dark room by doubling the size of the downstairs bathroom.
"The thing that thrills me about photography is the ability to capture and share a moment in time and place, and then the ability to expose others to things they otherwise just wouldn't see," said Barrett.
Across the hall in the same galleria lies a display of ceramic sculptures created by various artists such as, Cristofer Avon, Debra Collins, Philip Denst, Margo King, Nancy LaTorre, and Kathleen Wiedeman.
The exhibit will continue through January 31, 2007. The public is invited to attend a reception to meet the artists on Friday, January 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Hayward City Hall Rotunda, located at 777 B Street, Hayward, CA.
The Galleria is open Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the year excluding holidays and is only a short walk from the Hayward BART station.
