Operation Restoration 2 fundraiser

by Charlotte Flowers-Weston

Join Fremont Firefighters Local 1689, Fremont Chamber of Commerce and La PiÒata Mexican Restaurant, Monday evening, December 4, in a fundraiser for Fire Explorer Post #173.

The Fire Explorer program prepares teens and young adults to become professional firefighters by providing real life experiences in fire stations and in the field on emergency calls. This career development program is available to males and females between the ages of 15 and 21 who maintain a 2.0 or better grade point average and would like to explore a career in the fire service.

Included in the program are monthly training classes and business meetings. The students also get a chance to participate in community involvement projects and assist the Fire Department at major emergencies and special projects.

After losing City of Fremont funding due to budget cuts, the Explorer program operates now on fundraisers and private donations.

On Dec. 4, between 6 and 8 p.m., Fremont firefighters along with Chamber members team up once again for Operation Restoration 2, hosted by La PiÒata located in Gateway Plaza. Patrons are invited to enjoy plates of pintos, stacks of tortillas and graciously stuffed burritos, washed down with mugs of margaritas. All tips will go to Fire Explorers program.

“La PiÒata is a very generous community partner, allowing us the opportunity to again help the Fremont firefighters benefit a great cause,” said Cindy Bonior, president and chief executive officer of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce.  “Our first event together was very successful, earning nearly $2,000 for restoration of the firefighter’s antique fire truck. This time, we are pleased to work to earn money to help train the fire explorers, our city’s future firefighters.”

Everyone is invited to enjoy a delicious Mexican dinner while supporting tomorrow’s rescue workers.
