New Haven Unified board briefs

On Tuesday, October 17, the board received information on proposed changes to school boundaries. With the closing of Cabello Elementary School at the end of the 2006-07 school year and Barnard-White Middle School at the end of 2007-08, the goal is to redraw boundaries to balance enrollments as evenly as possible throughout the district.

Four options for new elementary boundaries and four options for new middle school boundaries were presented. It also was suggested that district-wide open enrollment be considered as a possibility.

Copies of the proposals, along with information from the Superintendent and a list of frequently asked questions, will be available at all schools and on the district website (www.nhusd.k12.ca.us). Also on the website will be a link enabling the user to enter a residential address and find out which school a child living at that address would attend under any of the proposals.

A series of forums designed to give community members and employees an opportunity to provide feedback will be held at the Educational Services Center, 34200 Alvarado-Niles Road. Forums are scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24; 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25 (in Spanish); and 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 1. Or, you may submit feedback by mail to the ESC and by e-mail (boundaries@nhusd.k12.ca.us). All feedback will be taken into consideration before a recommendation is submitted to the Board, which will vote on the boundary issue Nov. 14.

After the conclusion of the public meeting, the board returned to closed session to resume a discussion it began before the meeting, on extending the superintendent's contract. When the Board reconvened in open session, members voted unanimously to extend the Superintendent's contract for two years, through June 30, 2010.
