Math Science Nucleus announces $40,000 Grant
The Math Science Nucleus today announced it has received a $40,000 grant from The TPL Group to increase the math skills of low income youth and to also expand and improve the math lessons made available to teachers and students via the Internet. According to Dr. Joyce R. Blueford, president of the Math Science Nucleus, the correlation between improving math skills and the inclination of students to pursue technical careers is well established. She notes, however, that solid math skills enable students to do well in most other subjects, but unfortunately many students never make that connection. "We are impressed with the fine work that Dr. Blueford and her team have done to innovate both tutored course work and friendly Internet programs that encourage our youth to study math and science," said Dan Leckrone, chairman of the TPL Group. "We're confident that our contribution will be used effectively to further enhance the math segment of her program." Dr. Blueford confirmed that the new funding from The TPL Group will be used to help low income students improve their math skills. "Our lessons will be based on information derived from Xcel Educational Services, a Fremont based tutorial company, by interviewing the instructors to determine where most of the learning obstacles occur. Moreover, innovative lesson plans using animations and simulations will be developed and tested for use on the Internet." October Informational Meeting An informational meeting for parents who might fit the criteria for services will be held on October 21st, Saturday, 10-30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Students having trouble in pre-Algebra, Algebra (I, II), Geometry, and Calculus can be helped by this program. The meeting will be held at the Math Science Nucleus, 4074 Eggers Drive, Fremont.
