The FC Fremont Lightning, a Girls Under 14 Class I soccer team, started their 2006 season on Aug. 5 and 6 at the SCC Breakers Tournament in Santa Cruz finishing with a record of 1-1-1. Lica Monobe, Lauren Floro, Alaina Gold, Shannon Genberg, Deborah Blalock and Aubrey LaLumandiere all had solid performances throughout the tournament. Offensively Andrea Bonilla, Lindsey Cole, Janell Koide and Natalie Sanchez had over a dozen shots on goal, while first year Goalie, Molly Zamora, was spectacular in holding opponents to just one goal over the first two games.
Sabrina Sui scored the Lightning's first goal late in game one which resulted in 1-1 tie with the Manteca Rangers.
In game two against Mad River United, Sui, Kelsi Calhoun and Samantha O'Brien all scored in the second half within minutes of each other. They were assisted by Sanchez, Floro, and Blalock respectively. Defenders Emily Sutjeda, Melissa Grey, Genberg, Floro, Blalock, Gold and goalie Zamora worked well together to shut out Mad River 3-0.
In the third game, the Lightning held the Santa Cruz Breakers to just one goal in the first half. In the second half, FC Fremont had numerous goal opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net, losing 3-0. The loss knocked the Lightning out of the final round of the tournament. |
