Fremont Farmers' Market Association creates new Farmers Market
FREMONT, CA, July 26_NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.) now has their very own Farmers Market on site every week. Every Friday the Fremont Farmers' Market Association (FFMA) sets up a variety of booths with fare fresh from the farm for NUMMI employees. The market is a joint effort between the FFMA, NUMMI and Kaiser Permanente. The market is seasonal and takes place each Friday from 9:00pm-1:00pm, May through September.
"This type of cooperative Farmers' Market is unprecedented," said FFMA manager Bruce Young. The arrangement brokered by Young on behalf of the farmers between NUMMI and Kaiser represents innovative thinking about employees' health and well-being. Young says, "The thought behind the market was to give employees access to fresh produce and make it convenient for them to take things home to their families. It benefits NUMMI employees and benefits their families too."
The convenience of having fresh produce at their doorstep will hopefully encourage NUMMI workers to make healthier choices when it comes to eating. "So far it's been a big success," said Young. It also affords local farmers another market to tap into. "Farmers' Markets are the way these guys make a living," said Young. "I just want to give them another opportunity to reach people."
