Angels Win District 14 Tournament of Championsby Biff Jones
The Junior Division (13 - 14) Angels of Mission San Jose Little League (MSJLL) won the Fremont area Tournament of Champions (TOC). Other leagues in the Fremont area are, Centerville American, Centerville National, Fremont American, Newark American, Newark National, Niles Centerville, and Warm Springs of Fremont.
This was the second year in a row that the Junior Angels won the TOC. In the single elimination tournament, the Angels won by scores of 11-1, 13-4, and 6-5 in extra innings. Each league sends its best team (determined by regular season standings or post season playoff) to the TOC.
A team from Niles Centerville won the Senior (15-16) Division. This division only had six teams participate as Centerville American and Warm Springs did not field teams. The Major (11-12) and Minor (9-11) Divisions were both won by teams from Newark American.
The TOC is as far as the league's regular season winners can advance. Each league then assembles an all-star team from their respective leagues. Teams from the Majors compete in double elimination play at the District level. The District winners then move on to Sectionals; sectional winners to state competitions (in California's case, NorCal or SoCal); state winners go to regionals (Western Regional for both California winners); those winners advance to the Nationals; then it all gets settled at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn. during August. |
