by Shirley D. Sisk

If you are looking for something for your children to do this summer, consider checking out LOV's (League of Volunteers) summer programs that include a teen club, recreation in the parks, and a trip to the circus.

Y.E.S! - Youth Encouraged to Serve, is a free annual program for Tri-City teens. Be a part of your very own club doing community service and have fun recreation and field trips. Enjoy the LOV Y.E.S! Teen Clubhouse complete with video games, pool, Internet and movies for fun breaks in between service work. Field trips are earned by performing 20 hours of service. Free breakfast and lunch is available. For Tri-City youth going into grade 7 through 10. For more information contact Harold at (510) 793-5683 or email harold@ lov.org or visit www.lov.org. The program runs now through Aug. 17, Mondays to Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Free summer recreation in the parks involves leaders and assistants supervising games, sports, small arts and crafts projects and more. Each week features a special guest day. The children will receive a nutritious breakfast snack and lunch. A field trip is planned as well as an all-parks, season ending BBQ featuring the Civic vs. Mayhews softball game. This program is open to all Tri-City children ages incoming 1st through 6th grade. For more information contact Joanne at 793-5683 or visit www.lov.org. This program runs through Aug. 17, Mondays to Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Newark Recreation Department, Mayhews Landing and Civic Center parks in Newark.

A visit to Circus Chimera is a guaranteed good time for kids of all ages. This is a magical re-interpretation of Alice in Wonderland at Southland Mall in Hayward. The story is performed by acclaimed circus aerial artists, clowns, acrobats and gymnasts in a one ring tent. Dates for this event are: July 20 to 23.
