IronCops for cancer
This year's Penticton, Canada Ironman Triathlon will include four Fremont police officers among the competitors on August 27. The triathlon will begin with a morning swim of 2.4 miles the cold waters of Lake Okanagan, in the province of British Columbia, followed by a 112-mile bicycle run through nearby mountains, then ending with a 26.2 mile marathon. The officers decided to use their experiences to attract attention to the work of the Northern California Cancer Center (www.nccc.org), a local non-profit research organization. They are asking donors to contribute dollars directly to NCCC, in any amount.
Dubbing themselves the "Fremont IronCops," Capt. Frank Grgurina, Lt. Tom Mikkelsen, Sgt. John Liu and Officer Julie Cochran have each pledged to raise $5,000 for the organization. Using their extreme athletic efforts to advertise this worthy cause lends a greater sense of value to this endeavor. Capt. Grgurina notes, "All of the money we raise will go directly to NCCC, to support their mission of preventing cancer through population-based research and community education."
Donations can be made online at www.fpdironcops.bravehost.com or by contacting the cancer center at (510) 608-5000.
