Orioles 9 Angels 5
The Orioles and Angels squared off in the championship game for the CALL Majors. Billy Bergandahl took the mound for the visiting Angels while Bill Derose started for the Orioles.
After a scoreless 1st inning the Angels opened the 2nd with a run. The Orioles answered decisively with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning. Matthew Miranda and Sameed Siddiqui each delivered RBI base hits. Then in the 3rd, the Orioles added another run on an RBI single by Matthew Cordova to drive in Derose, increasing the lead to 4-1.
Now it was the Angels turn to answer as they closed the gap to 4-3 in the top of the 4th, when Akash Patel worked a walk followed by a single off the bat of Bergandahl. They were driven home behind Nick Keely's double to left field. The scoring continued in the home half of the 4th when the Orioles extended their lead to 9-3. Jared Elrod and Adam Rios contributed base hits during the five run surge and Jerome Cuarezma smacked a two run single. Before the inning was over Angels' starting pitcher Bergandahl was relieved by Keely who came in and recorded the final out of the inning before any further damage was done.
The Angels continued to claw back as they added two runs in the top of the 5th on Keely's second double of the day to close the gap to 9-5. Keely was able to keep his team close by shutting down the Orioles in the bottom half of the 5th. However, the Angels could not come any closer as Derose held them scoreless in the top of the 6th and final inning by striking out the last two batters to preserve the win. It was a complete game victory for Derose who struck out 11 over his six innings on the mound.
The win gave the Orioles the CALL Major division championship and sends them on to the Tournament of Champions (TOC). Congratulations to all the players and coaches and to manager Orlando Cuarezma for a great CALL season.
