Giants edge A's, gain berth in Tournament of Champions (TOC)
The Giants secured their spot representing NCLL in the Major's TOC by beating the A's 2-1 Sunday afternoon in a battle for first place in the second half of the regular season.
The Giants jumped to an early 2-0 lead when Matt Knight, who went 2 for 3 on the day, led off with a base hit followed by a Jesse Nohr (2 for 3) RBI double. Nohr then stole 3rd and came home on an errant throw to the bag. After a Pierce Romero (2 for 3) double, the G-men looked to be in for a big inning. However the A's hard throwing right hander, Austin Schreiber, then settled down and struck out three of the next five batters he faced and to leave the bags full and end the frame. Jenner Vigil led off the 2nd with a double down the right field line, but was stranded on base as Schreiber got out of the inning with no further damage.
The Giants protected their 2-0 lead behind great pitching and a strong defense, including Knight's catch of a shot off Schreiber's bat to keep him off the bases in the bottom of the first. Romero would keep the A's off the board in the first two innings, by recording 5 of his 10 strikeouts. The A's lone run would come in their half of the third when Schreiber walked, moved around the bases to third, then eventually scored on a passed ball. On the day, Romero would limit the A's to 4 hits off the bats of Josh Rustia, Louis Rodrigues, Joe Roth and Trent Jackson. Romero went 4 and 2/3's innings before the pitch count caught up with him and he turned the ball over to Knight. Knight then struck out the 4 batters he faced to record the save. Congratulations to the Giant's for a well played season.
