Music Awards banquetby Kevin Hanson
On May 24, the Newark Unified School District Music Department hosted their first Band Awards banquet. This event was established this year to recognize the hard work and efforts of district band students. David Smith, Mayor of Newark was guest speaker with John Bernard, Superintendent of Schools also in attendance.
A musician himself, Mayor Dave congratulated and praised the students for their hard work and accomplishments. He spoke about leadership and how they as young people can affect their school and community in a positive manner encouraging them to always take what they do seriously; but not themselves so much.... and to enjoy making music.
By popular vote, Jimmy Carter and Rachel Camins were elected King and Queen of the Band. The newly-formed Newark Memorial High School Jazz band performed.
