The Great Rotary 15th Annual Chili Cook Off
Area 3 Clubs of District 5170 Rotary International will host the 15th Annual Great Rotary Chili COok Off on Sunday, June 4 from 10am to 5pm. Area 3 is comprised of seven Rotary Clubs: Niles, Fremont, Mission San Jose, Fremont Sunrise, Warm Springs, Newark and FUN (Fremont, Union City, Newark) Sunset. This year's fundraising goal is $18,000 which will benefit the Tri-Cities Rotary Clinic, Washington on Wheels and the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation.
The Cook Off will take place in the parking lot of The Saddle Rack, 42011 Boscell Road, Fremont, featuring chili tasting, live music by Appaloosa, kids' activities, Miss Chili Pepper and Mr. Hot Sauce contest, a memorabilia auction, a hot rod car show, arts and crafts, food booths and lots of raffle prizes. Admission is $5 for adults (includes chili tasting kit) free for children 12 and under.
Over 30 booths will serve People's Choice Chili concocted by Rotary Clubs, community and church groups, businesses, firehouses and individuals. Among them will be the Holy Habaneros, winners of the People's Choice Award for the past three years. Cook Off attendees will receive a chili kit containing one VOting Ticket along with five tasting tickets, a spoon, a napkin and a cup. The will cast their votes by presenting their Voting Ticket to their favorite booth. The booth ending the day with the most tickets wins grabbing rights for the next year.
"We anticipate that this will be our most successful Cook Off to date with about 2,500 chili lovers and their families attending," says Daren R. Young, event chair and president of DRYCO Construction, Inc. of Fremont. "The event was created 15 years ago by the Sunrise Rotary Club as a benefit for the Rotary Tri-Cities Clinics. Clinics for uninsured residents were held regularly and staffed by volunteer physicians but needed funds for prescription medications and laboratory work. The annual Cook Off continues to raise money to meet that need. In recent years, we've expanded our beneficiaries to include Washington on Wheels, a mobile clinic that provides screening, immunizations and health education to undeserved areas, and the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation, the designated charity of our local firefighters."
