Sulphur Creek Nature Centerby Mona Shah
This summer let the Naturalist in you rein free to discover the Sulphur Creek Nature Center in Hayward. It is a great place to visit with activities for the whole family. Sulphur Creek is a wildlife center dedicated to bringing people and animals closer together.
The Nature Center has a Wildlife Discovery Center where exhibits teach about watersheds, creek life and the various animals and plants that depend on this habitat.
Sulphur Creek's wonderful and unique "Lending Library," lets you go home with your very own pet-for a week. Animals available for rent include rats, mice, hamster and guinea pigs. Critters come complete with a cage, containers for food and water, plus complete instructions on how to care for your new pet for the week. Animal rentals can only be arranged on weekends.
Science programs focusing on the natural history and ecology of local wildlife are offered for teachers and their students primarily for pre-school through grade 6. Students participate in lively discussions, conduct field studies and have hands-on experiences with live animals.
This year, the Nature Center will host its 20th Annual "The Birds and the Bees" Wildlife Fair. Enjoy an all star cast of birds and mammals as you are educated on how these mighty creatures prepare for Spring with exotic dances, flights and other mating rituals. The Fair will also feature arts and craft booths, as well as games, story telling, face painting and food. Musical entertainment is provided by the "Bungee Jumping Cows."
Sulphur Creek is actively seeking volunteers who will be trained to look after baby birds and mammals. These little creatures need tender loving care to grow strong and healthy.
