Auction of rare memorabiliaby Brian Haig
This year the Rotary clubs of F.U.N. Sunset (Fremont-Union City-Newark) and San Lorenzo are jointly organizing a fundraiser for the "Gift of Smile and Vision" program on May 14 with a spring dinner dance at The Saddle Rack in Fremont.
The goal is to raise $20,000 to help with medical costs for the Rotary Club of Tondo. Tondo is a district of Manila, Philippines which has the densest populated area in the world. It only costs $30 to repair and cure a cleft palate, glaucoma, or cataracts in Tondo and the doctors and medical staff give their time free.
The Rotary Foundation is expected to add an additional $10,000, so that over 1,000 Filipino patients can be cured. Rotarians from Tondo are expected to join in the fun which will include a dance competition, raffle and both a silent and live auction.
Signed guitars by Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen and collection and memorabilia pieces including sports figures Dennis Eckersley, Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Lebron James, Nate Thurmond, Muhammad Ali, Howie Longs Sacks, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Joe DiMaggio, Ken Stable, Fred Biletnikoff, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Hull, and Barry Bonds are some of the major items up for auction. There may also be an Amelia Earhart signature and photo, and other flying memorabilia available as well.
