Ohlone continues its winning ways
by Biff Jones
Despite the disruption of their March Madness Tournament due to bad weather, Ohlone's softball team continued their winning ways with home shutout wins against Chabot College, 9-0 and College of San Mateo, 8-0. These games were followed by a make-up road game against the De Anza Lady Dons of Cupertino on the 22nd; the regular scheduled game at Hartnell College in Salinas was postponed from the 21st to the 24th because of fickle March weather.
The De Anza Lady Dons started the scoring with an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning attributed to Ohlone Renegade throwing errors. The Renegades then settled down behind the six-hit pitching of Isabel Ramos. In the top of the second, Kristina Dasilva led off with a triple to right center, then scored on an RBI fielder's choice ground out by Tiffany Chan. The next batter, Angelina Franceschini, reached first on an error, was wild pitched to second, stole third and came home on a throwing error on the attempted steal.
In the fifth, Ohlone scored three times on walks to Torres, Meredith Ang and Dasilva and singles by Jessica Soderholm and Melissa Cross, and an RBI fielder's choice by Valerie Briones. The scoring ended in the sixth as the Renegades scratched out a run with a single by Ashley Marra, a walk to Torres and a Texas league single by Briones.
With the win, Ohlone's record moved to 11-0 in league play and 17-6-1 overall. The big game of the season comes up this Thursday, March 30th, at West Valley College in Saratoga. This is the only meeting with West Valley as Ohlone plays in the Northern Division of the Coast Conference and West Valley plays in the Southern Division of the conference. Teams only rotate home games against opponents in their own division. However, games against both divisions count in conference play. Since West Valley is also undefeated in conference play, the winner of this game will have a leg up on hosting a regional match in post-season play.
The next home games for the Renegades are Tuesday, April 4th against Cabrillo, Thursday, April 6th against San Jose City, Tuesday, April 11th, with Mission and Thursday, April 13th, with De Anza. Game time for all games is 3:00 p.m. and they last 2 - 2 1/2 hours. Come on out and support the Renegades.
