Creative endeavors can be the result of a serendipitous circumstance but are often the culmination of talent combined with long hours and hard work. In the music industry, groups may form, fracture and reform while looking for the right mixture of energy and sound. In order to recognize, nurture and reward the process, Pete Schaaphok, drummer of Mystic Rage, had an idea which he dubbed, Bands4Bands. Now in its sixth year, this organization helps assemble bands and form a network of like-minded musicians.
Schaaphok has always loved music. As a kid, after completing his paper route, he would visit Spitzer Music Store on 'B' St. in Hayward to look at guitars. He formed his first band in elementary school and finally was able to buy a set of drums following high school. Schaaphok says that the band, Black Dawn which later became Mystic Rage, started out sounding like Metallica. But things have changed. "Now we have evolved into what we are today- Tool meets Testament. We are definitely heavy and we like to say we are happy guys playing angry, aggressive music."
Being in a band is not all fun and games. "Band life is not like in the movies... they rehearse in my place thinking someone will knock on the door and change their lives- play the lotto! I think you should play music for the love of playing music. Guys that quit playing really never loved it to begin with. They all start to play to get the girls, but after a while you realize you play because you love music, although the girls can be a bonus."
Bands4Bands is an outgrowth of Schaaphok's love for music and those who share his passion. Musicians interested in starting a band, recording or networking can become a member of Bands4Bands, attend meetings and listen to guest speakers who help with legal and organizational issues. "We had the guy from the Expression Center out. They run a recording school and record bands for free," said Schaaphok. "I tell bands to sit in on a meeting and see if it is for you and your band. Most bands want shows and have a 'what do I get out of it' attitude. They don't last. Bands that help with support, have ideas, and are hard workers are welcome." Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at The Englander in San Leandro or for more information, visit www.bands4bands.com.
Each year, Bands4Bands recognizes outstanding members at a party filled with musical performances and special guests. Schaaphok says, "I think it is nice to recognize your peers that you love and respect. Call me crazy, but the Grammies weren't calling!" This year the award show will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 7 p.m. at City Hall in Hayward.
