Olive Hyde scholarshipby Arathi Satish
Olive Hyde Art Guild is not only a volunteer supported non-profit organization that provides an interest and appreciation of visual arts, but also helps local students by giving three scholarships annually.
The guild awards scholarships to Fremont high school seniors who have firm plans to continue art education at college level. Selected students must use the scholarship at an accredited school for the study of one or more visual arts in the categories of drawing, painting, mixed media, photography, sculpture, clay, textiles, glass, wood, graphic design or printmaking. The award to given to a person based only on artistic merit, not financial need.
In order to be eligible to apply, the students must meet certain requirements; a 2.5 GPA, along with permission from a parent or guardian and a recommendation by the school art instructor regarding ability and creativity. A portfolio of artwork ranging from three to ten pieces must be provided to the selection committee. Samples of artwork as slides or photos are encouraged. The committee is interested in knowing about the student's primary art medium, future plans to develop this interest, ability in visual art after graduation and finally, how the scholarship will be used to accomplish their plan.
Olive Hyde Art Guild will hand out three awards. One non-renewable award of $1,500 will be sent to the Financial Aid Office of the school the recipient will attend. Additional awards of $500 may be awarded to second and third place recipients.
Interested students must mail completed application to Scholarship Committee, Olive Hyde Art Guild, P.O. Box 3073, Fremont, CA 94539. Application deadline is March 17 and recipients will be selected by March 31. |
