Who is Prophet Muhammad?by Shabeena Ansari
Over the last few weeks, one news item seems to be dominating the media; an extremely offensive cartoon of the prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him) and violent reactions around the world. While we can argue about the merits of freedom of speech vs. responsible journalism, and peaceful protests vs. violent protests, lost in this debate is the persona of the individual who has been insulted and depicted in a most vulgar way.
Muhammad (peace be upon him), the Prophet of Islam, is incontestably one of the greatest and the most influential personalities in the history of mankind to his admirers and foes alike. Michael H. Hart, in his book, The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History (Citadel Press Books) ranks Prophet Muhammad as the most influential man in history. Hart writes, "My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world's most influential persons may surprise some readers and may be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular level."
The position Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) occupies in the hearts of more than 1.2 billion people and the repercussion of his legacy around the world compels an interest to learn about this incredible man. Many have heard about Prophet Muhammad in name, but know little about his teachings and mission in life.
All we seem to hear these days are lamentations and warnings of a clash between Islam and the West. Education is the only way to avoid this clash of civilizations and build bridges of understanding. In an attempt to educate and acquaint our neighbors with the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Bay Area Muslims are holding a series of talks and presentations.
